Update on Transportation and Sustainability at Eugene 08
At the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Track & Field, the local organizing committee reports that expectations have been met or exceeded in a number of areas. Attendance at the Eugene 08 Festival was excellent. Organizers estimate that more than 167,000 attended the events at Hayward Field.
Lane Transit District reported that both spectators and Festival attendees took advantage of the free LTD shuttle system. More than 50,000 people used the shuttles during the 10 days of the event, During the days of competition an average of almost 6,000 used the free shuttle service each day.
Additionally, more than 400 people took advantage of the free bike valet each day (and many other cyclists were riding and parking their bikes elsewhere in the vicinity.)
The Eugene 08 sustainability goal of ‘approaching zero waste’ was accomplished. According to the Sustainability committee, at the end of the event, only 3 boxes (20 yards) of trash were sent to the landfill, ten boxes of recycling were sent for recycling, and nine boxes of compostable materials went to Rexius for composting. This ratio of recycle/compost to trash is commendable for such a large scale event.
